General Conference Jeopardy April 2014

General Conference Jeopardy Questions April 2014

How we do it:  Get file cards or sticky notes and write one point value on the face of each card. Write, or cut out and paste the corresponding question on the back of each card. (Side note:  I tried to put the easier questions as the 100 point values and increase in difficulty of questions, but often what seemed easy vs. hard to me, was very different from the participants perspectives. Feel free to rearrange the order of point values and questions according to what you think is best.) Ok back to the directions:  If you have a moderator, they can have the answers or just put the answer on the back of the card also.  Stick all the cards in a vertical column under their respective headings  (on a wall or some other smooth flat surface that is visible to everyone in the group.)  (Another side note: You don’t have to use each category.  I just couldn’t resist making more and more headings and questions. There are way too many to use in one setting.) So, depending upon how many categories you use, you should have that many columns. I use different colored sticky notes for each category, but that is just because we have tons of colored sticky notes laying around the house.  (Oh wait, here is one more side note: If you are really short on time, you don’t even have to put the questions on the back of the cards. The moderator can just look on the paper and read out the appropriate question and answer. This saves prep time, but it takes longer during the actual game play, because the moderator has to shuffle through pages and locate the right question. That is how we did it at first, but the kids got impatient while I searched through the pages. Also, the first time we just wrote the categories and the point values on a white board and erased them as we answered them.  That way we didn’t even have to waste sticky notes!)    Ok. For real now. Back to the explanation. I won’t digress again.
Divide into two or more teams. Each team takes turns sending one player up to choose a sticky note.  Their team may help them decide which one to choose.  They (or the moderator) reads the question on the back. The team can confer and then say an answer. It does not have to be the person who chose the sticky note. Team members can use their notes from conference. (You will have to decide ahead of time a rule for if people can use their smart phones, etc. to pull up the talk right then to find an answer.) If the team gets it right, they keep the sticky note, and a player from the next team gets to come choose a note.  If they don’t get it right, another team can answer for a chance to get the sticky note.  Continue till sticky notes are gone, or until everyone’s attention span has worn out.  Teams tally their points to see who won. You don’t have to phrase the answer in a question like in the TV version.  This is just a loose approximation of the real Jeopardy game.  Also, the idea for this whole game is to encourage discussion about the talks.  Give people time to share what they learned, how they felt or what they liked about conference. It is great if people want to point out other good aspects from the same talk, or link similar concepts from other talks during conference.  The most surprising thing that I learned from this game is how much the little kids actually listened and learned!  Often, they recalled stories and ideas, even when it seemed like they were not even paying attention!
I have tried to include the source with the answers. Sometimes I even managed to put the time marker of when the referenced quote was said in the talk, if you want to watch it on lds.org. Unfortunately, I did not have time to do every question, but hopefully it is enough information.

I hope you have fun with it!
